Added some weathering and some minor details to a couple of factory painted cars...
First I picked up two of the Rivarossi RDG 50ft'ers.I added the aci decals, tack boards from DA and kadee couplers.

Next are the three recent RDG offerings from Bowser.

Beside the weathering all three received tack boards on the doors and aci plates.I also painted the top parts of the ladders green to give the banner some depth.

Looking over my copy of the Bee Line Vol.30 No. 1&2 of 09...The Search For An Ore Car...I decided I had to make myself a dedicated ore train my goal was and is to complete a 50 car loaded ore train and at this point I've completed 41 cars consisting of units from all the manufacturers...looking through cars I had in storage I came across two Bowsers undecorated 100 ton kits so I'll show these first.
Both cars were painted using Testors gloss black spray paint...first time I used a spray can instead of the air brush...added the top cord bracing using evergreen 291 angle,HK decals and weathered.

Views of the ore loads in each car

For the loads I used Woodland Scenics ore ballast. We all know hoppers look half full when carrying iron ore because of the weight so I wanted to try and duplicate this...
First...I applied scenic glue to the bottom of the hopper and loaded the ore...after I was happy with how the load looked I srayed the load carefully with Windex as a wetting agent and applied scenic cement with an eye dropper...once the load was dry I added rust chalk and sealed with dullcoat...if the load height is done correctly you can still use a commercial coal load to cover the ore and use the hopper in coal service.

Searching through my decal inventory I found three more HK 502's unfortunately I couldn't find any available undecorated Bowser kits for purchase so I took a different approach. The next three cars were purchased decorated for CSX...yes it felt weird buying CSX paint schemes.
I disassembled the cars and removed the lettering with sol-v-set and a toothpick and added the evergreen 291 angle bracing...the cars were then spray painted using Testors in a can.
HK decals,loads and weathered.
All three in the 418 series

High angle view of the ore loads

The next three cars were offered by Roundhouse years ago...I painted out the wrong positioned orange panel with a weathered black and the end left side panel orange
All three

These models did not come with inside bracing so before adding the loads I installed the inside bracing using evergreen styrene #292 angle cut to fit.

Looking through my array of stored cars I came across two Stewart,I believe H39 cars, that I did at least 10 plus years ago...I apologize for the sloppy decal application.I guess when I did these I was looking for something close to represent a HTz hopper.
I replaced the plastic wheels with Bowser 33" steel wheels and added the 291 angle bracing.I painted the end bracing and brake wheel yellow and added the load. Both units were already weathered and I might go back and paint the orange panel.

Last but not least four offsets in ore service.

So far 41 cars have been completed...100 ton cars from Bowser,Life Like(Walthers),Buchmann and Mckeen
Other cars from Athearn Atlas,Stewart

Happy Modeling

Chris:

Not trying to nitpick, but 2-things to share. First, the twin hoppers for Ore Service were all in the HTc class. The orange paneled HTv hoppers were for Stone Service, commonly called "orange blossoms" in company correspondence. The HTw hoppers did not have the orange side panel to the best of my knowledge. For whatever reason they were stenciled as shown below.
