Finished eight pieces of rolling stock...first up a couple of 50ft XMz boxes numbered in the 115300/397 series.
Both units started as undecorated Accurail models. They were painted with SCII box car red, trucks and wheel faces painted a grimy black, decals from the RDG modeler, weathered with pan pastels and AIM powders and sealed with dull coat.
I used the picture of 115302 found on page 74 of Bossler's book as a reference.

RDG 115311 XMz sides 1 and 2.

RDG 115345 XMz sides 1 and 2.

Both units together.

Here's a Foobie but a goodie. One gon that stood out to me was a picture of RDG 29208 GHw found on page 34 of Bossler's book. The notched reinforcement runner just needed to be modeled. My plan was to use the 46 ft gon offered by Walthers but I couldn't locate one.I had an Accurail 40 fter,so I decided to proceed.
I added the reinforcement runner using Evergreen angle styrene number 291 and made the notches using a straight razor. The unit was painted using SCII RDG green and then decaled using the RDG modler's yellow gon decals. After applying the first round of dull coat I hand painted the top runner using PS RDG yellow.AIM powders and pan pastels completed the weathering.
I know this unit is not prototypical for the RDG but it does look cool running in a consist.

My RDG GHw 29215 sides 1 and 2.

Don't forget to load your gons.

My next two units were class GHz's (37200/299)Both units are MTH offerings that were decorated for the RDG.I did not like their application of the RDG speed lettering so both received a bath in Scalecoat's paint remover.I used the same process and materials that I applied to my GHw.I have one more MTH model that will receive the same transition.
Picture of the one before coupled to the two completed models.

GHz 37282 sides 1 and 2.

GHz 37288 sides 1 and 2.

Don't forget to add some weathering to the inside of your gons.Makes for some interest when riding emty.

Units loaded with wire coils.

Coupled to a P2K model I did years ago.

My next project was to do a RDG class GHy-2 (38700/799).I choose the Walther's offering,I compromised,The model has 14 ribs where the RDG's had 13 rib supports. The unit was decorated for the GBW.Instead of giving it a full bath in the SC paint remover I dab on the same to the lettering and wiped off the print,I then washed it with warm soapy water and rinsed.Once dried I painted over the GBW yellow with SCII RDG green.I did apply the extra bracing on the top chord using the EG 291 angle before painting.Again, same procedure as on the other gons.

My GHy 38789 side 1 and 2.

The model does come with bracing for adding steel coils if you so desire. It come painted in the color of the car,I chose to leave it in the GBW yellow.

Till I get some Walter's steel coil loads I added this load from Chooch.

Chris,

Great work as always! I didn’t realize the P2K gon was match to any Reading prototype. However, I’ve never taken the time to try and match it to any class. Regardless, you models look good and give me reason to pick up more P2K gondolas at the next show. I’ve shied away from the MTH car only because of the molded on grabirons. That, I too thought the lettering and paint wasn’t the greatest.

Thanks, Mark
